The amphitheater of Caesarea had room for 4,000 spectators during the New Testament era. As recorded in Acts 12:19-23, Herod Agrippa I fell suddenly ill while making an appearance at a theater and died shortly thereafter. Josephus the historian gives us more details on the incident. Whether he was taken ill in this location or another theater in the city is unknown. Still, the restored amphitheater of Caesarea is a beautiful example of life in the Roman empire during the time of the New Testament. The facility is being used for concerts in Israel today.
