Fishing on the Sea of Galilee is typically done before sunrise, when fish are close to the shore for their feeding. When Jesus came to his disciples after the resurrection (John 21), he was preparing a small breakfast on the shoreline. Because of the low level of light, Jesus’ disciples couldn’t see him, though they were only 100 yards away (John 21:8). In the darkness, Simon wasn’t wearing his outer garment, probably trying to keep it clean. That’s why he put it back on before jumping into the water to swim to Jesus (John 21:7).
