Gath is the oldest excavation project in the southern half of modern-day Israel. The discovery of the foundations of the city gate from 1000 BC drew much attention in 2015. Nicknamed the “Goliath Gate,” this entrance to Gath would have been used by both Goliath and David. The excavations of the gate are only of the foundation of what was once a great structure. David’s behavior at Gath’s city gate was a source of embarrassment (1 Samuel 21:13). David later worked for the king of Gath. Eventually, he conquered the city. Gath was one of five important Philistine cities on the coastal plain. The others were Gaza, Ekron, Ashdod, and Ashkelon. All of the cities were near the intercontinental highway that connected Africa with Asia and Europe.
