Second Missionary Journey 02 Troas to Philippi

On Paul's second missionary journey, he, Silas, Timothy, and Luke traveled from Troas to Neapolis, stopping briefly at an island called Samothrace. They arrived at the harbor of Neapolis, known today as Kavala. From there, they took the road that led them through a narrow mountain pass to the plains of Philippi. Luke had just joined the travelers in Troas (note the first use of "we" in Acts 16:10). Luke kept meticulous notes about Paul's journeys, noting each stop along the way. Philippi had been the site of an important battle in 42 BC and had been named a Roman colony. Paul and his friends ministered for a short time in the city before a controversy broke out over the healing of a young girl. Paul and Silas were arrested, unfairly tried, stripped of their clothes, and beaten in the city square. Thrown into prison, they were singing at midnight when an earthquake broke them free of their chains. The jailer and his family believed the Gospel and were baptized, but the battered missionary team was forced to leave Philippi (Acts 16:10-40).
