Sea of Galilee Old Boat Net Casting 1

The Sea of Galilee is a lake and the largest body of freshwater in Israel. In the desert environment of the region, any large body of water would be called a “sea.” Other names in the Bible for the lake would be the Sea of Tiberias, Sea of Gennesaret, and the Sea of Kinneret. Tiberias is the only city on the lake, which measures 13 miles north to south, and about seven miles east to west at its widest point. The lake is about 700 feet (210 meters) below sea level. Only the Dead Sea (1,400 feet, 427 meters) is lower. The Jordan River flows into the Sea of Galilee and then continues to the Dead Sea. Jesus based his ministry on the northern shoreline of the lake, primarily in Capernaum. An estimated 80 percent of his recorded miracles happened in this area, as did most of his recorded preaching. He called several young fishermen to travel with him as his disciples, and after the resurrection, he met them at the lake again (John 21).
