Discouraged and depressed, Elijah desperately seeks to meet with God. Assuming the traditional location of places where Moses met with God is correct, Elijah traveled to the southern portion of the Sinai Peninsula, looking for Mt. Sinai (Horeb). Like us, Elijah had no clear idea of where the sacred mountain might be. Even so, he set off on a journey that was long and difficult, perhaps 200 miles (320 km) or more. Little wonder it took 40 days to reach the holy mountain! As for signs of depression, look at Elijah’s reply to God after he’d encountered the quiet, overwhelming presence of the Lord. Thankfully, Elijah obeyed God’s new instructions despite feeling lonely and discouraged.
