The phrase “Via Dolorosa” (“Way of Suffering,” or “Sorrowful Road”) does not appear in the Bible. Likewise, the road Jesus was forced to walk with his cross is buried somewhere underneath today’s streets of Jerusalem’s Old City. The exact path Jesus would have taken is hotly debated, and what was once outside the city is now inside the Old City walls. Jerusalem has been rebuilt and remodeled many times in the past 3,000 years. Nevertheless, people have heard of the Via Dolorosa and millions have walked the famous street on their visits to Jerusalem. The Old City’s streets are narrow, crowded and noisy. It’s a good place to remember the day when Jesus was forced to carry a cross to Golgotha.
