At the end of Elijah’s ministry, he passed his mantle to Elisha during a remarkable journey to Jericho and the Jordan River. Both men passed over to the eastern side of the river, but only Elisha returned. The water miraculously parted for both trips across the river, reminiscent of the day when Joshua crossed the Jordan with the children of Israel. In an important act of symbolism, Jesus chose to begin his public ministry in this same location by being baptized by John.
