Mt. Carmel towers 1,724 feet (525 m) over the Jezreel Valley in what was once the northern kingdom of Israel. In their showdown, Elijah taunted the prophets of Baal and Asherah through the morning and early afternoon. At the time of the evening sacrifice (1 Kings 18:29), Elijah built an altar, made a sacrifice and called for fire from heaven. When the fire fell, Mt. Carmel’s place in biblical history was secured for all generations. On an important side note, Jesus also died at the time of the evening sacrifice (Luke 23:44).
