Jerusalem Dome of the Rock tile detail 4

The Dome of the Rock is a Muslim structure. Technically, it is not a mosque, though many call it one. Instead, it’s a monument to mark a significant moment in the Islamic story. It also may be where Abraham nearly sacrificed Isaac, and where the Temple once stood. The Al-Aqsa mosque is a gray building located on the southern edge of the Temple Mount. The Dome of the Rock was constructed late in the seventh century, well over 650 years after Jesus was crucified. The gold finish was applied to the dome in 1959 and again in 1993. The site is called the third holiest site in Islam, though the word “Jerusalem” does not appear in the Quran. The Temple Jesus knew was more than twice as large as the Dome of the Rock, and 1.5 times taller.
