Jericho to Bethel

When Joshua had taken Jericho, he turned his sight on the fortified cities in the Judean Mountains. Ai and Bethel were communities in close proximity, about 22 miles (35 km) from Jericho, the lowest city on earth. That made for an uphill march through the canyons of the Benjamin Desert. Joshua first sent spies, then a small army, then the entire army. Centuries later, Elisha began his long walk home to the Galilee by going up from Jericho to Bethel.
