Elah Fortress possible Shaaraim wall foundations

At the end of the account of David’s victory over Goliath, the Philistines were chased back to Ekron and Gath on the road from Shaaraim to those two communities (1 Samuel 17:52). The word means “two gates,” and in 2007, a small fortress with two gates was excavated on the hill above the Elah Valley. Known as either the “Elah Fortress” or Khirbet Qeiyafa, scholars are still debating whether or not this is the Shaaraim mentioned in 1 Samuel 17. One possibility is that  Saul and his forces were holding fort there while Goliath and the Philistines were practicing siege warfare. The Philistines had a larger army and were armed with iron weapons. If Saul was inside the walls of Shaaraim, it would explain why a stalemate was taking place by the time David arrived.
