Elijah left the Kerith Ravine and traveled to Zarephath, a location between Tyre and Sidon near the Mediterranean Sea. One of the ironies of this location is that Jezebel, wife of King Ahab, was from this area. Her father was “king of the Sidonians” (1 Kings 16:31). Jezebel’s influence on Ahab and the northern kingdom was profound. She greatly increased the cult of Baal and Asherah. The Phoenicians also practiced child sacrifice. When Ahab brought Jezebel into Israel, the northern kingdom, it was only a matter of time before God’s judgment fell.
