Gezer was a fortified Canaanite city when Joshua first took the Promised Land. Though Joshua was successful in his military campaign, the Canaanites held on to Gezer. Solomon took the city, as he did the entire land of Israel. Gezer guarded an important crossroads that saw intercontinental traffic between Africa, Europe and Asia. Gezer’s “standing stones” are a mystery. They probably had religious significance, but also might have served as monuments.
