Use this video to give your audience an overview of Jerusalem. Because Jerusalem has changed so much in the past 2,000 years, it’s difficult to see the Jerusalem that Jesus knew. The iconic stone walls of today’s Old City offer a good illustration for the city Jesus knew, even though the walls we see are only 500 years old. The shape of the city is also different than it was when Jesus knew it. The Temple Mount, however, is the same size as it was during the New Testament era. Today, the Islamic structure commonly known as the Dome of the Rock is the landmark of Jerusalem instead of the Temple. In this video, you’ll be able to identify the Mount of Olives, the traditional location of the crucifixion and the Judean Wilderness. Note how close the wilderness is to Jerusalem. It’s only 5 miles (8km) to the edge of the wilderness and just 15 miles (24 km) from the Temple Mount to the Dead Sea. Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness before beginning his ministry. The traditional location of the crucifixion is inside the city walls today, and surrounded by buildings. That location was a stone quarry positioned outside the city walls when Jesus was crucified.
