Negev Desert Wadi Tzafit narrow canyon 522

The southern half of Israel is a desert wilderness called the Negev Desert. Some of the Negev is fairly flat. Other areas feature deep ravines, canyons and craters. All of it is rocky. With no major water sources and only a small amount of rain during the winter, water is hard to come by in this region. Even today, the area is sparsely populated. Moses led his people through the Negev after their escape from Egypt. His spies left the desert and returned with reports of a fruitful land to the north, but the people wandered in the wilderness for 40 more years before taking the land. Generations later, Elijah ran to the Negev wilderness after defeating the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel.
