Jordan River beginning at Caesarea Philippi

The Jordan River begins far to the north in the Hula Valley. Of the three tributaries that form the Jordan, none is more dramatic than the Banias River at Caesarea Philippi. Jesus visited this region (Matthew 16:13) with his disciples. In those days, before an earthquake devastated the area in 1837, water flowed out of the mysterious cave. It was called the "Gates of Hades" and revered by pagan cults. See our coaching video on the Gates of Hades to discover more.
