Protecting the water supply was one of the most important thing a king could do for his people. The massive water gate illustrated here was used by the kings of Judah to protect the Gihon Spring from enemies setting siege to Jerusalem. David's men conquered Jerualem by entering through a water shaft. Hezekiah later diverted the spring completely underneath the city. When David named Solomon his successor, he had a small party take Solomon to the Gihon Spring for anointing. When Solomon rode David's mule back into the city, people knew they had a new king.
