Abraham and Isaac journey to Jerusalem option 1

Abraham and Sarah had a son in their old age. They named him Isaac, but then God asked something unthinkable of Abraham. God demanded that Abraham sacrifice Isaac “on a mountain I will show you.” (Genesis 22:2). The Bible doesn’t tell us that Abraham and Isaac wound up in Jerusalem, but a strong Jewish tradition says the test of faith took place on Mt. Moriah, or the Temple Mount in Jerusalem today. While there might have been some people living in the area when they arrived, “Jerusalem” as a town did not yet exist. The traveling party reached the mountain on the third day. Travel two full days from Beersheba in any direction except north, and you’ll not find a mountain. Ancient travelers expected to travel about 20 miles in a day. Hebron is 20 miles from Beersheba, where Abraham, Sarah and Isaac lived (Genesis 21:31-34). Another day’s travel would have gotten them close to Jerusalem. On the third day, they would have had their pick of dramatic mountain locations, including the site where the Temple Mount stands today.
