We don’t know if Jesus ever visited the Jewish community at Gamla, but it’s possible. Only 19 miles (31 km) from Capernaum, Gamla had a strong heritage in conservative Jewish teaching. Jesus visited many towns in the Galilee area (Matthew 11:1), teaching in their synagogues. Jesus also spent time in the Decapolis, and the road leading to Gamla was also one of the main roads leading into that area. The synagogue at Gamla is one of the best preserved from the time period.
