Jerusalem Old City walls and gates

The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by walls, with six official points of entry. This video  looks at each of the gates, starting with the stone-sealed Eastern Gate and ending with footage of  the Damascus Gate. The walls and gates we see today are about 500 years old. The shape of the  city today is far different from the shape of the city under the rule of David, Solomon, and the  kings of Judah. Nehemiah led the campaign to rebuild the city after the exile ended. Just before  Jesus was born, Herod the Great doubled the size of the Temple Mount and greatly enlarged the  city. In the past 2,000 years, the city has been damaged by war, earthquakes and fire, but always  rebuilt. Many times, the shape of the walled city changed dramatically, eventually leaving the  Jerusalem David knew completely outside of the walls. In the meantime, new walls encircled an  open area said to be the place where Jesus was crucified. During that time, the execution site would have been outside the walls, probably at an abandoned quarry. But no matter what era, or the shape of the walled city, visitors always needed to find a gate. Many of the psalms speak of  Jerusalem’s gates. On Palm Sunday, Jesus entered a gate on the eastern side of Jerusalem on a  donkey, the way a king would on the day of his inauguration. The Bible does not tell us which  gate Jesus chose as he entered the city.
