After Moses died, Joshua crossed the Jordan River at flood stage and led a most unusual attack on Jericho. This video focuses on Tel Jericho. A tel is a term to describe an ancient city. A tel like this one has several layers of civilization. As enemies overtake a city, or as an earthquake knocks it down, a new group will build new structures on top of the old. Therefore, as archaeologists dig down, they uncover older history. For defensive purposes, people built their communities on hills. Like most cities near well-traveled roads, Jericho also had a protective wall. The ruins of ancient Jericho are far smaller than the modern-day city, but not everyone lived inside the walled city. During times of siege, farming families living outside the city walls would have come inside the fortress for protection. Jericho lies in the Jordan River Valley, where there are few rocks. The city wall and buildings were built of sunbaked mud bricks. The city is also vulnerable to earthquakes, and apparently, at risk from an army of shouting people.
