One of the most famous parables Jesus told can be beautifully illustrated by the fields around Capernaum and the Mt. of Beatitudes. In this video, you’ll start and stop on the image of a field with a very clear path. Jesus used a path through a field to begin the parable. Look closely and you’ll see a stone wall encircling many of the fields. Every year, farmers have to remove rocks from their fields after the winter rains. For centuries, those rocks have been used to build fences around the property. Weeds and thorny thistles grow up among the rocks, creating yet another illustration for one of the elements of the parable. The rocks underneath the soil are also important, even if they can’t be seen. Rocks hold heat better than soil, so any seed near a group of rocks will germinate quickly. But without roots, the plants can’t live. As Jesus pointed out, those seeds will produce no fruit. The most obvious secret hidden in plain sight about the parable of the sower is that no farmer wants any of his seeds to fail. He’ll do everything possible to create an environment for success. Indeed, the seeds in these fields are bearing maximum fruit. This is the life Jesus intends for his followers.
