Nazareth photos from early 1900s

Nazareth is a large city today, with a population approaching 100,000. It was a small village when Mary heard the news that God had chosen her to be the mother of the Messiah. The Church of Annunciation marks the traditional location of that announcement. Though there are some ruins from the first century underneath the church, there’s no way to know from Scripture where Mary was when she encountered the angel Gabriel. That makes the church the epitome of a “traditional” location. Nevertheless, it is the most recognizable landmark in Nazareth today. One effective way to show your audience what Nazareth was like when Mary and Joseph lived is to use the photos from the Eric Matson Collection. Taken in the 1900s, these photos show a much smaller Nazareth and people living according to ancient customs. Another option is to show footage from the Nazareth Village, an “ancient” village staffed by modern-day actors.
