Patmos survey with titles

Patmos is an island in the Aegean Sea. Only 60 miles (97 km) from Ephesus, Patmos was used as a place of exile for political prisoners. During the reign of Domitian, John’s proclamation that Jesus alone is Lord would have been a direct affront to the Roman emperor, who demanded that title for himself. As an apostle and key leader for the Christian movement, John would have been seen as a political enemy of Rome during Domitian’s era of intolerance. John would have been an old man while on Patmos, and it is somewhat amazing that he lived through the experience. When Domitian was assassinated, Rome celebrated. The Roman Senate damned his memory and released his political prisoners.
