Nile River

The Nile River is the backdrop for some of the Bible’s most familiar stories. As an infant, Moses floated here. As the man leading the Exodus, Moses challenged his people to leave the safety of the well-watered Nile River basin in order to find a “Promised Land.” These images can answer questions Bible readers have had for generations. Why didn’t the Hebrews immediately leave with Moses or show more enthusiasm for the journey? And why did they so quickly complain about not having water? In a glance, the answers are obvious. Where the Nile River flows, there is life. But within sight of the river or the irrigated land, a rugged wilderness awaits. Trusting that God had called them to leave the security of the Nile River and follow Moses into the wilderness must have been the most difficult test of their lives. And within a few hours of their escape from Egypt, all of the people would have been desperate for fresh water. Today, an estimated 95 percent of people living in Egypt live within 12 miles (20 km) of the Nile. Likewise, Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus probably lived within a short distance of the river during their brief stay in Egypt (Matthew 2:13-15).
