The Garden of Gethsemane was a place where people cracked and pressed their olives. An ancient oil press was operated in this location, conveniently located so farmers could bring their olives down the steep hill of the Mt. of Olives. The press might have been in a cave, and it’s possible Jesus had access to it. Another option could be that the group slept outside in the comfortable spring weather during Passover week. It wasn’t the season for harvesting olives, so there would have been plenty of room in the garden. The Church of All Nations marks the traditional location of where Jesus prayed at Gethsemane. John 18:1 gives us the detail that Jesus and 11 of his disciples crossed the Kidron Valley as they approached the place where Jesus would pray. The other gospels tell us that Jesus often stayed in the location. Several very old olive trees are in the traditional location of Gethsemane today. The Church of All Nations was built between 1919 and 1924. If the church isn’t in the exact location of where Jesus prayed, it’s within a very short walk.
